Program Information

The Northeast Kingdom Council on Aging is a St. Johnsbury, Vermont-based non-profit serving adults (60+) and their
caregivers. Northeast Kingdom Pets for Life became a new (2010) program sponsored by The NEK Council (at that time they were doing business as The Area Agency on Aging for Northeastern Vermont).

Brief history: In 2009 The NEK Council
began the “Meals to Pets” program to assist Meals on Wheels recipients in-need with supplemental food for their
companion animals. Meals to Pets got started with generous support from the Banfield Charitable Trust and the Meals on Wheels Association.

Since Meals to Pets began,
community members have increasingly recognized that companion animals can have an enormous positive influence on
the lives of elderly and homebound Vermonters. Responding to this growing awareness, the Council started the "Northeast Kingdom Pets for Life" initiative
in 2010 -  extending the Meals for Pets scope and mission.

Today, an all-volunteer Pets for Life advisory council works to create and facilitate education, outreach and information services - all to encourage and
support relationships between elderly and homebound Vermonters and companion animals.
